My name is Kelly Kurtz and I am the owner of Kelby GSD. I have a lifetime of experience in breeding and training
German Shepherds. I am dedicated to the constant improvement of the breed and show my dogs in the obedience ring and
the european working dog/conformation ring. It is my good fortune to have mentors who guided me in the development
of my breeding program and provided me with a large selection of well bred animals to choose from. No person could do
this alone. It requires the support and sometimes, tolerance, of a loving family. I am blessed with Tom, Tomy
JR., Paige, Lauren, and Robyn to support me in this adventure.
If I do not have the pup your looking for I would be glad to help you find it. Two pages on this site have been
created to give knowledge to those looking to make an educated decision about where to buy a pup, and what to look for.
Not everyone wants, or needs, to read them, so feel free to just go onto the current litter page to find out what we have
available!!!
I have a wide variety of types and colors of pups for my customers to choose from. Here at
Kelby, we average about 10 grown up dogs in the program at any given time. This sometimes means you have to wait
for a pup. Waiting for the right dog for your family may seem to take FOREVER, but a good dog, the right dog, is worth
waiting for! Kelby dogs are of the best quality, and I prove my dogs worth for breeding, not just breed any two dogs
together. Our pups are well socialized and raised with loving care. We breed from the finest
European lines. Some exciting new additions to the Kelby program will make our dogs even more strong minded, good tempered,
and if possible, even more beautiful. Wherever you buy your dog be sure it is from someone who is passionate about
the breed and is interested in finding the right pup for you. No breeder is perfect, read our guarantee page to know
what to expect in the event of a problem. I have bred over 30 litters of pups in 15 years. Anyone
who comes to my house will see dogs raised with love and affection. Dogs raised with vet care, above and beyond vet
care, and well socialized. I have plenty of professional references as well as client references. No one who comes
to my home to buy a pup leaves without one because they found me or my dogs lacking. They either found it elsewhere
in their time frame, or I didn't have the sex they were looking for. I've helped many people find dogs at other kennels
when they couldn't find it here. I am passionate about my breed, and no one could try harder than I to do this breed
service. This breed is one of the hardest to "get it right", and I have been involved with it since I was 13 years old.
Come, meet me, and my dogs. You won't be disapointed!
KELLY,
Just an update regarding my German Shepherd Dog, Timber. Timber has exceeded my expectations in every respect,
so I hardly know where to start.
Timber has bonded closely with me, but is also friendly with family and friends, as well as their pets. My kids
and ex have five dogs, and my neighbors a few. The dogs range from a Chow, to a Hurricane Katrina rescue, a Mastiff
and three labs. How well they play together in my yard is simply remarkable.
As for training, it was much easier then I expected. A few potty accidents and that was it. Timber has not
had an accident in the house since he was about three months old. I realized that as he continued to mature, it was
up tome to decide his training and fun stuff. So it has been chuckum, search, and a great deal of swimming. Perhaps
being raised with my son's labs has a lot to do with his love of swimming.
Timber anticipates every move I make. For example, if I put my wallet in my pocket he knows I am leaving, gets
excited and waits for me by the door. I feed him a BARF diet and when it is time to eat he won't go by his eating spot
until I am finished filling his food bowl.
As you know I am fostering German Shepherds. The home visit took place last Friday and I was concerned because
Timber can be protective when strangers visit. The result was he was never better toward a stranger. The visitor's
conclusion was I have seldom seen a better dog, and are confident you can foster both males and females.
As you know my son has a lab that has been very competitive in national competitions, and might qualify for the world
championships this year. Timber has attended almost every one of these events since he was a pup, and his ability to
handle large crowds is astounding to me.
Finally, thanks for being so helpful. Your advice and willingness to board Timber has been invaluable.
Warmest Regards,
Chuck
Kelly,
I just wanted to tell you again how much we are enjoying our first German Shepard
Dog, Xoey. She is absolutely the sweetest and most gentle dog I have ever known. She is smart, versatile, and
adaptable. She takes whatever people throw at her and excels at everything. She loves kids, her obedience work,
and swimming. She is also fiercely loyal and protective. Sometimes we wonder what we ever did without her.
So, thank you again for the wonderful addition to our family.
Love
~ Sara and Dennis & Xoey
Hi Kelly, We've named our pup Mia. She has been great. She's been getting up just once at
night. Is very lively when she's up and around, but likes to lie nearby when I'm working around the house and barn.
Has not put up a very big fuss when left alone for a couple of hours. She weighted 14.7 pounds at the vets' office a
week ago. I think she really benefitted from the care and attention of your girls -- she seems quite secure and happy.
I'm attaching a picture of her in action. As you can see, her ears are pretty well up. Tom
Hi Kelly,
It's Ray here.
I just thought I'd give you an update on how JR Vom Kelby (I call him Leo) is doing.
First off, I want to say he's a great dog! A great companion and as loyal as they come. He turned 3 years on October
10th.
In 2005 he had completed his AKC CD Obedience title and got his AKC TD.
In early 2006 he earned his Novice UKC Obedience title (UCD) and later in the year he earned his AKC CDX. He didn't do
too bad either. For his AKC Open legs he won his class at a German Shepherd Specialty (Topline) with a 194 1/2 ( and
was 2nd high in trial that day), next he was 3rd at a large All breed trial with a 195 1/2 (we lost the runnoff for 2nd),
and then finished up with a 188 1/2 at another large All Breed trial. At that last trial he didn't sit on either halt during
the figure eight. Don't know why that problem sprang up, but, you know, things happen.
After he earned his AKC Open title, I went back and showed him a couple of more times in UKC Novice. I wanted to earn
enough All-Star points to possibly make him eligible for the UKC Invitational in Novice for this year. The top 50 ranked
dogs in each level for 2006 will be invited to compete at their Invitational in June of 2007. UKC usually does 2 trials per
day. When I showed Leo for those extra All-Star points he was High In Trial at both trials that day. The first trial he won
outright, and the second trial he had to win a runoff with an AKC OTCh dog and did it.
A few years back I won the 1st UKC Invitational in Open with my mixed breed dog J.D., so I really wanted to take
a shot at Novice with Leo at the UKC Invitational. He's a big GSD, about 28 1/2 at the withers, but when he's "on" he
can really heel well. We'll be ranked near the bottom of the top 50 in Novice but I'm sure we'll be invited.
We are currently working on Utility. I'm in no hurry although he is pretty far along with his Utility training. I'm sure
I won't show him in Utility until next fall. He seems to perk up with the cooler fall weather.
That's about it. He's a great Sheppy, is loved, and has as good a home and life as any dog could dream
of.
Hope you appreciate the update.
Ray
Hi, just running thru some web sites and thought we would say hello,,we bought tasha about 6 years ago and
fritz, formerly RITZ,,, just wanted you too know how much we love these two, there has never been a kinder more gentle girl
in the world with out little two year old,, and Fritz, what can I say, I love that guy so much, listens too a tee, and is
a great companion, never worry about anything when he is around,,if you remember him as Im sure you do,,he turned into a massive
guy, with a heart of gold, cant tell you how happy we are with the both of them,,,so just wanted to say hi and give you an
update, Tom and Jami,,,,
Hello! Not sure if you remember me or not but I wanted to say hello. I will try to send you some pictures of Jager
soon, he is doing wonderful. He never seems to stop growing, every time we bring him to the
vet he comments on how large he is. At the last visit he weighed about 95lbs, he is very healthy and gets walks/runs
often. We recently moved to Michigan with my
job and bought a home with a HUGE fenced in back yard for him to run around in. His temperament is outstanding and I couldn’t be happier with him.Which leads me to my next point. We are seriously considering adding another
GSD to our home. Since he was a puppy Jager has socialized with many other dogs so I do not anticipate a problem adding another dog. What are your thoughts on this? Are there any
upcoming litters that I may be able to get a puppy out of?Thanks!Shawn
hey kelly! I havne't sent you an update yet so I attached some pictures for you. The dogs get
along wonderfully and Brandy was an absolute breeze to train. I think Jager had something to do with that. She
is an very large puppy so far according to the vet, she is quite a bit heavier then Jager was at this age. the
vet tells me I can expect to have a giant lady when she's all done. We couldn't be happier with both of them.
they both have so much personality and life. Thank you again for everything!
Shawn
Dear Kelly:
I am so sorry we have not kept in touch about Gracie. I've been waiting to include a picture,
but decided to just write since I don't have a recent one.
Gracie is doing great. She has really added a lot to our family. She keeps our son
running as they chase each other around the house. She has learned to bring her bowl to us when she is hungry.
We did not teach her that, she just started doing it. We did have one problem with potty training. She would go
sit at the back door when she had to go, but not say a word. Then she just waited until she exploded. :-)
We wouldn't even know she was waiting for us. Now we have put up some bells on a string, and she rings those when she
has to go.
She is holding her own with our big dog. They play a lot. From watching them I think
when she gets bigger she will become the dominant dog. She has more spirit than our big dog.
Wanted you to know that all is going well. She is beautiful. I will send a picture
when we get some made. We are having a great time with her.
Shannon
Hi Kelly, Just a note to let you know that we had Sam's hips and elbows x-rayed today.
Our vet says they look good and he has sent the x-rays on to the OFA. We should have the results within a month.
Do you ever hear from the owners of any of Sam's brothers or sisters. We would like to know how they are doing if you
have. I will e-mail you as soon as we hear anything. At our obedience classes she has started using some agility
tools such as a short jump and Sam has really taken to it, he is the only one who didn't just try to run around it but actually
jumped over it each time we told him too. Still a bit of a brat but hopefully that will improve with age. We have
been told by several people that he would make a great policy dog, and one state patrolman even asked us if we wanted to donate
him when he gets old enough. Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Mary & Jeff
Hi Kelly,
Yes, I heard about Debbie's loss of Roxi. We still haven't met -- but have emailed on and off since getting
the pups. I sent her an eamil just a couple weeks ago to see how her Christmas was etc. and she told me what happened! Wow.
I was shocked. I'm sure that was very difficult. She told me about getting the new pup right away. That worked out nicely.
She still wants to get the new pup together with our Zoe - even though Zoe is older and everything. I'm sure they'll have
a blast.
Allison and I keep talking about getting our girls together and will soon I'm sure. I'll be sure to try
to capture a shot of Misty and Zoe together! :)
I'm off to bed. Zoe is already in her crate --- when she's tired and it's time for bed - she just crawls
in there with the door open and zonks out. She's SUCH an awesome dog. In so many ways,.......especially with the kids-wow.
She has more than exceeded my expectations.
Hope things are going well for you. Talk to you soon.
Love, Janet
Hi Kelly,
I meant to reply to you as soon as I got it and things
got busy at work. Thank you for the nice response. We had a great time picking up Ella, and my grandson Jake loved all the
dogs!
That is too wild about the other people naming blue
collar girl Ella!
Our Ella is doing very well, she is real smart especially
with Jo' as her mentor. I've had them out together for walks the last two nights and she's picked that up really well also.
Our vet. (Dr. Work) at Greenfield Veterary Clinic has
three GSD's himself, and he made a point to show her to one of his assistants. She asked if Ella was imported. When I told
her you were the breeder in Walworth she asked for your information. I pointed her to your website, so hopefully you will
get an inquiry from her.
I've got more pic's coming of the girls as they become
sisters, and best of friends. I don't want to inundate you with them Proud Papa that I am so I'll send them every month or
two.
Hope all is well in Walworth, we are having a well above
average temp. winter here. I'm a boater, so I won't complain if we have seen the last of the snow!
Take care, Gregg
OMG don't get me started...
We luv him to death, he has turned out to be just a wonderful addition
to our family. Dave gets a little upset because Hogan is such a mommy's boy. He's doing really well in
the house, we can actually go places and not worry about coming home to a destroyed house. We got invisible fencing
up (about 1 1/2 acres) so he runs and plays every chance he gets. He luvs all the other dogs in the neighborhood,
and luvs when my daughter brings her kids over so he can play with them. Sometimes I am sorry that I got him
"snipped" because he is so beautiful. I will try and remember to send you some pics of him, because he really grew
into a pretty dog, but he hasn't grown into those ears yet.... lol
I wish you still did the training, because I
love doing that sort of thing. How is Jacko doing, are you still showing him? And, are you still breeding
dogs ? I think about the classes alot, because all the people and dogs were so sweet, It would be nice to know how
Hogan's sister and friends are doing.
Thanks so much for keeping in touch, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Erika
Kelly,
I just have to tell you- our pup Wolfie that was from your October 1st litter- is so awesome! He is 90lbs and is absolutely
gorgeous. We took a walk yesterday and his nose went wild- he started tugging at his leash and a doe and her little fawn sprung
out in front of us! If you have any business cards you would like to send me- please pass them along. Everywhere I go people
want to know where Wolfie came from. He is just FULL of love- and so are we!!
Thank you for a great experience!
Tammy
Hi Kelly,
I wanted to give you a
quick update on our adorable Lola – she has TOTALLY stolen mie and my husbands’ hearts! She is a BRILLIANT dog
with a wonderfully funny and happy personality. I cannot believe how fast she learns – I don’t know if it is just
the BREED or this exact pup, but everyone who knows her well agrees she is HIGHLY intelligent and SOOOOO good! She loves her
home and she knows well all 3 of our hair replacement salons and is very socialized already! She really hangs by my side;
I am so extremely happy with how well she is turning out. Thank you for having such EXCELLENT dogs! I have referred you to
many people and will continue to because I believe you have mastered the art of breeding well-rounded, intelligent and extremely
loving dogs.
Thank you for everything, but most of all for Lola!
Best, Stephanie and Art
Hi Kelly, I just wanted to give you an update on our little (well, not so little anymore!) Badger and
send you a picture of him. He's growing so fast and he is very smart. He just graduated his beginner puppy class
on Tuesday. He is very sweet and very calm. The biting has gotten much much better, he's totally potty trained
and he walks on a leash like a dream. Eric and I just love him and we're so happy with him. Thanks again Kelly,
and happy holidays! Sarah
Hi Kelly!
I wanted to send you a quick email and let you know how C.C. is doing. She weighs 58 pounds
and is really a wonderful girl. She is completely housetrained and knows sit, down and stay. We go for long
walks and she is so well behaved, if I stop to talk to someone along the way she just lays down and waits while I talk.
Of course she is full of energy and gets rambunctious at times, but that is normal. My son has gone off to college so
she and the cats are my only "kids" left. We are very happy with her.
The summer flew by so fast, I can't believe it.
I have been watching your website and it seems that you have been busy as well. The two girls on your website
now are adorable! I wish I could afford another one!
This is my work email, you can respond here or at home,
if you get a chance.
Mary
Hi Kelly. Things are going really well w/ the puppy. We are currently attending obedience classes and
Judge is the star. When we go somewhere like a nursing home or fall festival most people think he is being trained
for something (rescue or police work?) because of his personality and the way he acts. He is a great dog and
we are both having lots of fun.
